Alexandre Benois, Watercolors

Watercolors by Alexandre Benois (1870-1960), a Russian artist who spent much of his adult life in France. He is probably best known today as a stage designer for theater and ballet, but I love these watercolors. Above, an Italian courtyard.

Versailles, 1905.

The Venetian Garden at Versailles, 1910.

Grand cascade at the Peterhof, 1918.

Birthplace of Maurice Ravel, 1914.

Entrance to a house in Lugano.

Lake Primel, Brittany (or so Google translated from the Russian), 1910.
