The Dover Bridge Site

Today I saw an exhibit of artifacts from the Dover Bridge Site, a colonial house or tavern site in Talbot County on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The main thing the archaeologists found was a bunch of pits filled with trash, including this wonderful array of artifacts. This stuff dates mainly to the early 1700s.

The most spectacular find is this nearly complete stoneware jug, from the German Rhineland.

More German stonewares.

This is an earthenware Tyg (large, multi-handled drinking vessel intended to be passed around) from the British midlands.

Wine bottles.

A Staffordshire slipware bowl.

Tobacco pipes.

My colleagues Jason (standing straight) and Greg inspect one of the tables.

I try to act like an expert.
